Obama’s Budget Ends Sequestration, Boosts Funding
President Obama will propose ending sequestration in his 2016 budget request – boosting the governmentwide budget by $74 billion, according to the administration.
Obama will ask for a $37 billion increase in non-defense spending – to about $530 billion in 2016. He will also ask for an additional $38 billion in defense spending – increasing it to about $561 billion in 2016.
The president budget request – to be released Feb. 2 – will instead focus on infrastructure improvement, manufacturing and benefits such as paid sick leave and free community college, according to an administration official.
“As we make these investments in our future, the president will propose to end the across-the-board sequester cuts that threaten our economy and our military. The president’s budget will fully reverse those cuts for domestic priorities, and match those investments dollar-for-dollar with the resources our troops need to keep America safe,” the administration official said.
